John Cage – The Aesthetics of Silence

John Cage’s aesthetics of silence was influenced by philosophical ideas, artistic concepts, but also by practical and existential challenges. During the lecture we will trace his artistic and ideological path from the expressionist period through the influence of Eastern thought up to the aleatoric period, including his most famous composition – 4’33“. We will also try to consider what psychological traits of the artist’s personality shaped his art and aesthetics and what made him one of the most influential avant-garde figures of the 20th century.
